The news this morning that the PM is releasing an AI plan backed by tech giants is critical for the NHS.
AI has unprecedented potential for NHS productivity – tools exist that can reduce missed hospital appointments by 30%, saving the NHS up to £320 million a year and reduce the backlog.
Comment attributed to Brigitte West, Product Director, DrDoctor:
“The government’s new action plan is a really positive next step towards boosting productivity in the public sector. This is much-needed recognition that AI can be used for operational reasons - so that clinical staff can spend less time on admin and more time delivering care.
“The best AI solutions solve real world problems and are targeted, built and modelled with purpose. This is why we need to be realistic with the use cases and consider how AI products work in practice. Some of the biggest benefits we’re seeing at the moment are from applying AI to improve operational efficiencies at scale and help make healthcare team’s workflows much more effective.
“But I’m hopeful with this grant, more NHS services will roll out AI tools more quickly in the right places and move beyond small pilots when we have the evidence it works. When applied effectively, our AI tools help to reduce missed hospital appointments by 30%, saving the NHS up to £320 million a year and potentially reducing the backlog. And once we start investing in these tools, we can make care entirely interconnected – introducing these solutions will make prevention over treatment a reality”.
