In the last century, climatic changes induced by human activity have shifted the habitats of the province of Yunnan in the People’s Republic of China – ushering in an additional 40 bat species, who carried around 100 types of bat-borne coronavirus along with them. A study by Cambridge’s Department of Zoology is the first to provide evidence of a mechanism by which climate change could have played a direct role in the emergence of SARS-CoV-2.
