It is crucial to understand the impact of the new regulation, according to Learna, a leading healthcare educator.

Hospitals throughout England will receive funding to implement a crucial new measure known as "Martha's Rule." The National Health Service (NHS) recently announced this measure, which is expected to positively impact the healthcare system and enhance patient outcomes.

The decision follows the death of 13-year-old Martha Mills in 2021. In south London, she developed sepsis while under the care of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

A coroner determined that earlier identification of warning signs and transfer to intensive care could have saved her life.

Dr. Hayder Ewad, Programme Lead for Acute Medicine (PGDip and MSc) at Learna hopes this new ruling will give patients more power, encourage medical professionals to listen to those they are treating, and normalise the idea that doctors should welcome being challenged.

"This legislation promises to empower patients with increased control over their medical treatment. It ensures that medical professionals listen more carefully to their patients and consider their opinions when deciding treatments. The NHS must ensure that all healthcare providers comply with this law and that families receive the necessary support and information”.

Dr. Ewad continues: " The introduction of Martha's Rule emphasises doctors must work with patients collaboratively and patient-centred, and promote an open and inclusive approach to healthcare, prioritising listening to patient input. This puts patients at the heart of healthcare, leading to far-reaching effects”.

Dr. Ewad concluded: “At the core of healthcare lies the importance of involving patients and their loved ones in the decision-making process. It is crucial to listen to their concerns and take appropriate action. Martha’s Rule will put families at the centre of the patient's care. This means recognising and valuing their role in the treatment of their loved ones. By prioritising their involvement, healthcare providers can ensure that patients receive the best possible care and support”.

The scheme began in April, with an initial wave of applications, approximately 100 hospitals - which represent around two-thirds of all hospitals in the country - eligible to apply. Hospitals that are successful in their applications will be able to access a range of benefits, including additional funding, training opportunities, and access to new technologies and treatments.
