The cost-of-living crisis has forced 34% of people to abandon their annual eye check-ups and review their contact lens subscriptions to cut costs

Over a third Brits (34 per cent) say they are planning to skip their annual eye check-up, due to financial pressures of the cost-of-living crisis, according to a new survey.

The poll, commissioned by EuroEyes London and conducted by independent survey company Censuswide, quizzed 2,096 consumers who wear glasses or have issues with their eyesight on how financial pressures were impacting their health and wellbeing.

An additional 33 per cent of respondents said they were struggling to afford their monthly contact lens subscription. Meanwhile 16 per cent said they had to change their career due to the state of their eyesight.

A further 48 per cent said eye surgery would likely change their life in terms of confidence and independence. Meanwhile 55 per cent said transforming their vision through eye surgery is a lifelong investment.
Nearly half (45 per cent) said they find contact lens problematic in certain situations due to a risk of contamination or needing to remove them for certain activities.

Laser eye surgery offers a positive solution to these economic and societal issues as 48 per cent believe that eye surgery would significantly improve their confidence and independence.

Dr Fadi Kherdaji, Eye Surgeon at EuroEyes said: “With the cost of living crisis continuing to bite, it’s very worrying to see so many people sidelining their eye health and general wellbeing to make ends meet. The latest treatments and surgery exist to help improve and correct vision and nobody should ever have to leave a job because of their sight.”
